Tech Advisor was at a preview event to view the new phone before its announcement. As you've probably figured out from the title we're talking about the Samsung Galaxy S10e hands-on. But still, there's no shortage of excitement about the device on Chinese social media.
The Mate X comes in interstellar blue (the little of it that isn't screen), though that's hard to see in real life. As with any device in this new form factor, I'm skeptical about the utility of a large square display. When unfolded face-out to become more tablet-like, the screen size increases to 8-inches. The Mate X's 6.4-inch rear panel sits next to a protruding grip section that clips the fold into place with a push-release. The Mate X is priced at $2600 (€2299) while the Galaxy Fold will cost $1980 (€1740).
Out of the box, it runs on Android 9 Pie with an EMUI 9.1.1 skin on top. LG and Oppo also made 5G smartphone announcements. The secondary screen is also the screen to use if you want to take a selfie. The others include OnePlus and Samsung and its 5G variants of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Fold. That's complimented by a secondary back screen measuring 6.38 inches (2480 x 892 resolution, 25:9 aspect ratio). Huawei surpassed Apple to become the world's second-largest handset maker past year. But it's also more functional-it's a mini tablet and smartphone in one. Even so, it could take a while before most consumers can enjoy the benefits of the technology.
For taking photos, the Galaxy Fold boasts half a dozen cameras, including three in the back, two on the inside, and one on the cover. It has a groove called a sidebar that allows you to hold the phone from one end. To purchase the Mate X unlocked with no warranty as you can do with other Huawei products on Amazon is not really a good idea at this high price.
The US has been urging its allies to ban Huawei's 5G equipment because of fears that the equipment could be used by the Chinese government for espionage.
At Mobile World Congress today, Chinese manufacturer Huawei chose to show off its foldable smartphone prototype.
