Trump sets expectations low for Helsinki summit with Putin

While I'm not a fan of the way President Trump put his message, I also think it's important to look at what he really said, not just an out-of-context headline.

Out on the streets, the summit attracted a grab-bag of protesters, with abortion-rights activists wearing artificially bulging bellies and Trump masks, anti-fascist protesters bearing signs with expletive-laden insults, and free traders, anti-war Ukrainians and gay rights supporters making their voices heard.

"I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade", Trump said, adding that "you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe".

During a joint press conference with Putin, Trump refused to back the USA intelligence community's assessment on Russian Federation and railed against the Federal Bureau of Investigation and his political opponents.

The president hit the links both days. Lawmakers had to decide whether, or to what degree, to criticise a president popular with GOP voters over an issue that hasn't played much of a role in campaigns.

"There is no question that Russian Federation interfered in our election and continues attempts to undermine democracy here and around the world", he said.

"The president must appreciate that Russian Federation is not our ally", Ryan said in a statement.

Their comments come contrary to President Trump sided with Vladimir Putin in the Russian president's assertion that his country was not involved. "President Trump needs to stop treating Putin like a friend and start holding him accountable".

Burr's committee conducted an investigation and supported United States intelligence agencies' finding that Putin ordered a campaign to interfere in the 2016 election.

Bolton replied by noting that when he spoke with Putin in preparation for the summit in June, the Russian president "made it plain that he said the Russian state was not involved". They may underline the importance of continuing the discussions, setting the stage for discussions on expert level.

Paul also says Putin isn't going to extradite the 12 Russian military intelligence officials charged with hacking Democrats. He says there's "no evidence when it comes to the actual facts".

"Our relationship with Russian Federation has never been worse", he wrote, blaming "many years of USA foolishness and stupidity and now, the rigged witch hunt!"

"The main thing is zero collusion, and it has had an impact on the two largest nuclear powers in the world", he said. Throughout the world, Russian Federation is often on the opposite side of USA interests in crucial areas such as Ukraine, Syria, and Iran.

Russian president begins joint press conference, says Russia never interfered and doesn't plan to interfere in USA domestic politics, including elections.

Protesters have been on the streets of Helsinki to denounce the policies of both Trump and Putin.

The meeting comes after the US President visited Britain after he attended a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation conference in Brussels. He didn't directly fault Trump.

The meeting comes just days after 12 Russian intelligence officers were charged by a U.S. federal grand jury for hacking the Democrats ahead of the 2016 election, the most detailed United States accusation yet that Moscow meddled in the election to help Trump.

It is officially the third time they have met in person, but the first time in a one-to-one summit between the USA and Russian Federation. "There won't be a Perry Mason here, I don't think". "To cast doubt on the validity of various things is fair".

The president did not elaborate on Putin's idea. It is clear from the findings in the Intelligence Community's assessment that Russian Federation tried to undermine the fundamental sanctity of our democracy and our basic values.

Trump regularly berates some news outlets as purveyors of "fake news".

Trump said he respects Europe's leaders but adds that they've taken advantage of the USA on trade and defense spending.
