Well, not exactly. If it were that simple, Garcia might have a lot more prized possessions in his display case than the green jacket he won in a memorable back nine charge past year that included an eagle on the par-5 15th hole.
A terrible tee shot at the 11th flew past the trees of the right, and his next shot clipped some fans in the gallery, forcing Woods to scramble for a bogey. A bad drive and punch from the pines led to a bogey on 11, and a shot into the water on the par-3 12th led him to another bogey.
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Tiger Woods tried to take the positives from his first round in a major championship since 2015, enjoying being back in the chase again and feeling good about keeping a shaky round from getting away from him.
Also, Woods is arguably the greatest player of all time, and all four of his victories at the Masters came during the height of his career. At the par-5 15th hole, he dropped five different shots into the water to tally a single hole total of 13 to now sit tied for 85 and second to last on the leaderboard.
It was his first round of a major championship in almost three years and his first at the Masters since 2015.
"I think I have the right amount of confidence and composure that it takes", he said of playing Augusta National.
But a series of errors from the tee saw the four-time Augusta champion Woods finish at one-over with a 73.
"This course will test you", Woods said.
He started in somewhat typical fashion by spraying one off the first tee.
"I felt like the ball was going to stop", Garcia said.
"So it's just about playing the golf course for what you get, recognizing what the tendencies are this course brings and what my own tendencies are when under the gun".
The shellshocked 38-year-old, who eagled the hole during last year's final round, finished the day with a nine-over-par 81, with English amateur Harry Ellis the only player to fire a worse score.
"I'll always have demons out here, but I'll always have a tremendous amount of confidence", Spieth said.
Kuchar had a similar run on the second nine after two early bogeys and played his last 11 holes at 6 under, without another blemish on his card.
American Tony Finau was no doubt happy to simply be making his Masters debut after suffering a sickening injury during the pre-tournament par-three contest.
Spieth rolled in a 14-foot eagle at the eighth, and two-putted from 40-feet for a birdie at 13. "I changed the glove and went pin seeking after that", Spieth said. After starting off bogey-birdie, Finau finished the day 4-under to enter the clubhouse as the outright leader for the time being. "I figured I had two par 5s ahead of me". And I fought hard to get it back in there, and I'm back in this championship. "As of right now, I'm only five back". And I made that putt.
That was more than the defending champion Sergio Garcia could say after a meltdown on the par-5 15th cost him any realistic chance of surviving the cut.
Rose is tied for 21 right now after shooting an even-par 72.
