Weightlifter Deepak Lather bags India's first bronze

India's star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu proved to be a class apart from the rest of the field in the women's 48 kilogram category at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, yesterday.

Sanjita, much like Mirabai, broke the Commonwealth Games record in Snatch with a lift of 84kg in her final attempt, which gave her a 3kg-cushion over Toua.

Wales weightlifter Gareth Evans has won the nation's first gold medal at this year's Games in the men's 69kg final after lifting a combined total of 299kg.

"Our athletics team may not have experienced athletes but I expect them to do well in the relays and jumps especially the high jump where we won our first worldwide gold medal through Emmanuel Ifeajuna in 1954 at Vancouver games". On the second day, the Indian team started with a bang as Sanjita Chanu won a gold in women's 53 kg category.

However, where she might have expected that gold to be the first of many victories, subsequent success would be hard to come by. Lather is just 18 and was competing in a new weight category after having competed in the 62kg category at the Commonwealth Championships two years ago in Pune, where he won gold and at the World Championships in Houston that same year. "I had such bad luck there", said the Manipuri, referring to her failure to manage even a single clean lift at the Rio Games in 2016. This hasn't been entirely without its benefits.

The 24-year-old posted a total of 261kg to triumph by a margin of 12kg over India's Gururaja. However, she refused and made a comeback at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in the U.S., where she won gold. "I remembered my family and my country", he said when asked what went through his mind in those nervy moments.

The Indian team, which finished fifth in the last two editions of the Games, will play England on April 8 next.

"Because of this injury I still can not train too hard. But I am confident of a good performance", she added.

And so it happened.
