Notre Dame has never beaten the Huskies in the national championship game. The Fighting Irish had not won a title since 2001. The Irish tied it up on the next possession and that five-point lead evaporated and was tied up with less than a minute left.
President Bartel, a Notre Dame alum herself, said Ogunbowale exudes the qualities instilled in DSHA students. Ogunbowale's 3-pointer was just the second last-second shot that won a championship game.
The Fighting Irish knew before they took a 13-point lead near the end of the first quarter over a team that had yet to trail in the 2018 NCAA women's basketball tournament.
Notre Dame broke that mark thanks to the heroics of Ogunbowale, who hit the buzzer-beater Friday night to lift Notre Dame to a 91-89 victory against CT in the national semifinals. Mississippi State beat Louisville by 10 points, and Notre Dame beat UConn with a two-point clutch shot by Ogunbowale.

It was the second year in a row that Mississippi State (37-2) fell short in the title game.
Ogunbowale's off-balance 3-pointer in the title game capped a record comeback by Notre Dame and an incredible weekend for the sport. Jackie Young looked over her options, trying to get it in for Jessica Shepard at the low post, but she was heavily guarded.
Ogunbowale, who is on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated, saved her best for last on the biggest stage.
Mabrey had a layup attempt swatted away by the ferocious junior center Teaira McCowan.
McCowan had a tougher shooting night than usual, going 7-of-19.
So Vic Schaefer opened with a statement thanking his seniors and in praise of Notre Dame and then he said this: "We're up five with a minute, 40 seconds to go".
"We did so many things wrong in the first half", McGraw said. The Irish closed out the quarter with a 16-1 run, tying the score 41-41 on a put-back by Shepard. Young, who had 32 points in the semifinal win over UConn, struggled all night and finished with six.
And with a deeper bench than the now famously-depleted Irish, the Bulldogs could afford to expend some extra energy chasing the Irish ball-handlers around.
"I think Jackie and Arike did a little more ball-handling and running the point, and I think that took Marina off to the wing a little bit more", McGraw said.
"We didn't get two stops when we needed to get stops", Mississippi State's Blair Schaefer said.
"You just got to give Notre Dame credit".
Vivians led the Bulldogs with 21 points in her final collegiate game. Notre Dame became the seventh school to win multiple championships.
It was a knock down drag out fourth quarter as each team traded baskets.
In a first half the Villanova Wildcats dominated, Kansas Jayhawks sophomore centre Azubuike still managed to provide a memorable highlight during the Final Four clash.
