Oswalt helped finish the book after McNamara's death.
A suspected California serial killer who committed at least 12 homicides and 45 rapes throughout the state in the 1970s and '80s was identified yesterday as a former police officer, an official said.
However, Oswalt admitted the "surreal" turn of events is "bittersweet" without his late spouse around to celebrate the news.
Natalia Bedes-Correnti said Wednesday that Joseph James DeAngelo never yelled at people but would be on "his driveway yelling and screaming, looking for his keys".
After the news of the killer's arrest came to light, McNamara's husband, well-known actor and comedian Patton Oswalt, took to Instagram to credit McNamara's work for helping with the arrest.
In the Irvine cases, the killer broke into the homes, police said. Some of the alleged crimes overlapped with his time as a police officer in Auburn, California, authorities said. "It kept interest in tips coming in".
Law enforcement officials, however, did not provide details and would only say that advanced DNA technology led to the breakthrough, citing ongoing investigations.
"I can remember thinking, 'It's getting dark and no one is home with me - I've got to be really careful", she said.
"A longtime resident who wishes to remain anonymous said, "I saw them bringing out two bodies and I asked my neighbor what is going on and they said don't you know there have been murders, two murders, right here and this is just right down the street from me". He was dubbed the East Area Rapist after his start in Northern California, the Original Night Stalker after a series of Southern California slayings and the Diamond Knot Killer for using an elaborate binding method on two of his victims.
"What they can do with it now, to identify, unidentified bodies, perpetrators, felons, killers, rapists, is incredible", said Maddie Misheloff.
The Sacramento Bee reports authorities plan to make an announcement later Wednesday about the suspect's arrest. "But as my research takes me across California the more I feel the moniker, with its jarring juxtaposition, is apt", she wrote in a 2014 post.
"He's running out of time", he told the audience.
Jennifer Carole's had just graduated from high school when father Lyman Smith, 43, and 33-year-old wife Charlene were found dead in their home in March, 1980.
Soon he landed a job as a police officer in the small Central Valley city of Exeter, 45 miles (72 kilometers) south of Fresno, where he served from 1973 to 1976, "around the time of the Visalia Ransacker cases", another name affiliated with the same attacker, Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones said.
"The hook for me was that the case seemed solvable", she wrote. "I was on the hunt".
"He'd just be yelling at nothing in the backyard, pacing in circles", Grant Gorman, who grew up in the house behind DeAngelo, said.
"Discarded DNA" gave investigators "more confidence this was our" suspect, Jones said.
McNamara's book includes a passage envisioning the scene when the killer is ultimately arrested, saying he would hear a vehicle pulling up outside and "footsteps coming up your front walk".
"The doorbell rings", she wrote. This is how it ends for you.
