Frozen Four: Can Michigan hockey pull an upset and beat Notre Dame?

"To go into overtime and win a national championship, nothing could be more exciting than that".

The other game will see Big Ten champion Notre Dame and Blackhawks defenseman prospect Dennis Gilbert take on MI. They finished the regular season in third place in the Big Ten conference behind first-place Notre Dame and second-place Ohio State.

Wolff is one of 16 Minnesotans playing for UMD, making its second consecutive appearance in the national title game.

The game couldn't have started better for the Bulldogs, who parlayed an early offensive flurry into the initial lead when Louie Roehl found the back of the net after his team missed a number of golden chances.

The realization had already set in that he would never wear that MI maize and blue again and Dancs' emotions couldn't be hidden. They also have Quinn Hughes on defense. The state will be represented by 21 players when Minnesota-Duluth and Notre Dame meet for the national title at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.

Jorgenson said that in the 2011 title game, it felt like the entire arena was rooting for the Bulldogs to win.

Following the game, the Wolverines expressed disappointment losing on what seemed to be a harmless two-on-two rush in the final seconds of the game. "And you just get on a run and keep it going, and figure out how to play tough, close games like that".

"I felt like my ankle broke", Tufte said. And unfortunately it was just a bad bounce there at the end. And it went in.

MI had their chances to get the go-ahead goal as Notre Dame fell into some penalty trouble. Dylan Malmquist, a freshman from Edina, had the first assist on Jake Evans' tying goal early in the third period. To hear comments from them, click on the video box above.

"(Faceoffs were) a point of emphasis all week in practice, believe it or not, because MI (dominated faceoffs) when we faced them earlier", said Notre Dame coach Jeff Jackson.

Michigan, which had a 2-0 lead after a goal just 17 seconds into the second period, felt like it had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory after allowing three straight goals. "We've done that the last two times we played them".

The Bulldogs will face MI or Notre Dame on Saturday night.

And just as hopes began to dwindle, freshman forward Michael Pastujov answered the Wolverines' prayers, as he punched the puck in off a scrum in front of the net with 5:22 remaining in regulation.

"He's going to have so many opportunities", Calderone said.

The Frozen Four is the final two rounds of the NCAA Division 1 mens ice hockey tournament. But the Buckeyes did not add another, ending their season. With a few coaching changes, now another one at Minnesota, any time there's a coaching change - especially with the high quality coaches they bring in - the league only gets better and better.
