Amazon's Echo Spot voice-activated assistant is now available in Canada for $169 CAD, after releasing last December in the United States. It could very well end up being the flawless streaming and smart speaker combo, though that's unlikely since Amazon risks muddying up its smart speaker lineup with such a device.
There is no news on when the Alexa Echo Show, which has a larger screen, will become available in India. You can also block access to explicit songs on Amazon Music. See a product in a soap or film and why can't you pause your TV to purchase that item on Amazon.
The Echo Spot comes packed with four microphones with enhanced noise cancellation, acoustic beam-forming technology, and second generation far-field mix technology.
Echo Spot can be used for watching news videos from different media houses. With the multi-room music feature, users can play their favourites throughout the home, with synchronised music across all your Echo devices. And of course, users can even watch video trailers from Amazon Prime Video. While this is a good indicator that India seems to have an appetite for smart speakers, it is interesting that this launch comes weeks after rival Google Home's launch. That display means you also get at-a-glance access to the time, date and temperature, plus a whole lot more depending on what you ask Alexa. On the other hand, Amazon device offers touch interaction experience similar to a smartphone. Drop In is also available on all Echo devices in India.
The feature reveals that Amazon is paying attention to a loud chorus of customers who were concerned that the act of rudely commanding Alexa to do something sends out the wrong kind of message, especially to the youngest members of your household.
"Tens of millions of households already use Alexa, and today we're excited to introduce an entirely new way for kids to have fun and learn with Alexa", said Dave Limp, Senior Vice President, Amazon Devices and Services. "We have expanded her natural language understanding to fully comprehend context and intent, even if the sentences include Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam or Punjabi proper nouns".
The smart speaker market in India is getting exciting.
The major change, however, is to Alexa, whose feature set has been altered to suit a younger user-base.
