Amazon Prime customers who have set up the Key service select it on checkout. Each time a delivery driver requests access to a customer's vehicle, Amazon verifies that an authorized driver is at the right location with the right package, through an encrypted authentication process.
Amazon already wants to leave packages in your home when you aren't there with Amazon Key, and now the company is expanding that to your vehicle. When an Amazon delivery driver needs to drop off a package, they can connect to your lock via Amazon's cloud to unlock the door.
Amazon said the service is available now across 37 cities and surrounding areas, with more rollouts planned. Just last month, the company announced a new feature in which customers can receive a photo of their packages that are left when they are not home.
"The in-home service is working great, and from the very start we knew we wanted to take it beyond the home as well", Peter Larsen, Amazon's vice president of delivery technology, told the publication. If you do not now have an active connected service plan, just push the blue OnStar button inside your vehicle to activate service.
An app allows customers to buy something and authorize their vehicle to be unlocked remotely when the delivery person is nearby without a key or security code.
Services like OnStar and On Call have had the power to remotely unlock cars for years, which comes in handy when drivers panic after realizing they've locked themselves out of their vehicles.
First, download the Amazon Key App and link your Prime account to your car-service account.
Amazon is now everywhere you want to be-or at least in your trunk if you own the right auto. On the day a package is scheduled for delivery, customers use the Amazon Key app to confirm that their vehicle is parked in a place where a delivery can be made. You do get notifications of delivery status, and there's no additional charge for the service.
Also, packages will only be delivered to publicly accessible, ground-level parking, which means vehicles receiving deliveries can not be parked in parking garages or gated lots. Amazon has a tool for checking if you are eligible for trunk delivery in your area, but we've also listed the participating cities below.
Apart from the obvious security concerns, there is some fine print you'll need to consider. A selection of alcohol is also available for delivery to customers in Sacramento and San Diego, Amazon said. If the package doesn't fit in the trunk, it will be placed in the cabin.
