President Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday and said he would nominate CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace him, putting an ardent foe of the Iran nuclear deal in charge of USA diplomacy as Trump also dives into high-stakes talks with North Korea. Rumors that Tillerson had been on the verge of quitting last summer first emerged in October and he also made national headlines after he allegedly referred to Trump as a "moron".
But this might not be the end of Trump's relationship with Tillerson. "Congratulations to all!" tweeted President Trump.
In announcing his selection of Tillerson as Secretary of State, Trump calls him one of the "truly great business leaders of the world".
Mr Tillerson was reported to be astonished at how little Mr Trump grasped the basics of foreign policy.
"I know Gina personally, and she has the right skill set, experience and judgment to lead one of our nation's most critical agencies", Burr said. "I didn't seek this job", he said.
Mr Tillerson's dismissal follows a wave of departures and turmoil in Mr Trump's inner circle.
Their long-simmering tensions erupted into the public in October, after Mr. Tillerson suggested the USA could engage in talks with North Korea.
