Asked which players he wasn't pleased with, Mourinho responded that he would "prefer to name the good ones" and highlighted Man of the Match Matic as a stand-out performer. Reports claim some players at Old Trafford believe their manager's treatment of the English defender has reached the point of bullying, as they were left stunned by Mourinho's latest comments.
"I feel for Luke a little bit because when he was at Southampton he looked an outstanding prospect at left back and it was a good move for him to move to Old Trafford".
With Shaw making just 39 league appearances since he joined Manchester United four years ago, Paul Scholes certainly knows what he's talking about. He then suffered a horrific double-leg break during a Champions League game against PSV in September 2015. Nearly two and a half years on, surely that injury can now be put aside and cannot be held as the reason the player has failed to progress.
Like any soap opera, the Mourinho-Shaw saga was by now regularly rehashing its own storylines.
Former Southampton youth academy director Jason Dodd, who is credited with bringing Shaw through the Southampton set-up, says the England global is tough to motivate.
"I felt his head was not in the right place to make the sacrifices and decisions that are necessary at that age."
Matic, though, who has been one of the club's most important players this season, hailed his manager.
"There's a lack of accountability, they don't talk enough".
United have triggered the option of an additional year on his contract but it is accepted that unless Mourinho markedly changes his view of Shaw, it is likely the full-back will be sold.
"I think the word "protected" would be better than pampered - there's a big difference", Upson said. Nothing seems to be working. "He's always spoke really well about us when we've played here".
The 22-year-old left-back has endured his fair share of ups and downs since joining from Southampton in 2014, fresh from becoming the youngest player to feature at the World Cup in Brazil.
If Mourinho could come up with a game plan that played to the strengths of Pogba or Sanchez rather than marginalising them, might they suddenly start showing evidence of personality, class and desire?
