'American Idol' and 'Timeless'

'American Idol' and 'Timeless'

Two years after Fox announced the cultural behemoth would come to a close after 15 seasons, here it is back again on ABC.

Plus, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Ryan Seacrest weigh in on the revival. Longtime host Ryan Seacrest has returned to the series. iHeartRadio DJ Bobby Bones is set to be the mentor for the Top 24 contestants this season.

Moreover, following an uneventful night on the Oscars red carpet, Seacrest, who has been accused of sexual misconduct, has been operating business as usual in the days that have followed.

For starters, the gimmick has been diluted by the numerous follow-up seasons (this will be the sixteenth "Idol") and various competitive shows.

Katy Perry surprised 19-year-old contestant Benjamin Glaze from Enid, Oklahoma on Sunday's premiere of American Idol with his first kiss while vying for a spot in Hollywood. The show began to delight more in the bad singers (the William Hungs of the world) than the good ones. The girl who brings her seven-year-old sister into the audition with her. Making viewers instantly root for people is key.

"'American Idol' and I have always been circling each other", she says, "and it just hasn't been the right timing". Producers of the revamped "Idol" have said they didn't try to replicate that, but "wanted to get it right". She played guitar and had an indie singer-songwriter vibe. "I love the sound of your voice", Richie said, comparing Turner to a martian. It'll be a fast-paced season so buckle up and get ready for the fun.

Ron Bultongez auditioned next.

Richie said the goal is to find more than a singer: "We are looking for an artist, and that's going to require our expertise".

Katy Perry then chimed in and explained that one of the greatest advantages of the show is that the judges only have a limited influence. Cute little viral "moments" may inspire short-term chatter, but compelling, magical stories are what make shows like this matter. Increasing interest in this roll of the programming dice is that, on Mondays, "Idol" will be doing battle with NBC's "The Voice", the show that stole the music-competition reality thunder.

"It's been every emotion that you can dream up", Luke says of the experience so far. He's going to Hollywood after all. But, for those who are fans of the classic history of the show, Sunday night's (Mar. 11) reboot premiere made it nearly seem like the beloved series never went away. These new judges seem to be up for drawing blood as well.

ABC is betting that "American Idol" will move the ratings dial, especially since it already has one new hit, "The Good Doctor", this season. We don't need any more bullying, anywhere. The judges gave him a Golden Ticket to the next round. Her claim to fame is that when she was 11-years-old, her performance of the National Anthem went viral as one of the worst renditions of the song ever.

McKinney's own Kristyn Harris will showcase her talent on "American Idol" on the March 18 episode in her celebrity audition.
