Waterproof AirPods to be released with voice command feature

It is expected that Apple will release a new version of the headphones later this year.

Apple's AirPower charging unit could be launched as early as next month. According to Bloomberg, that model will be water-resistant so that it can withstand the occasional rain or water splash, but it will not withstand being fully submerged in water. A Polish retailer previous year suggested that the AirPower would cost $199 (£142), but it seems unlikely that an independent shop would have been clued up on a future Apple product. The new AirPods, could use that same chip or move on to something like a W3 (if naming conventions hold). Seeing as AirPods primarily work with Bluetooth, it makes sense for Apple to integrate a new chip in the AirPods, so the overall listening experience can be heightened.

Apple introduced the first AirPods in September 2016 alongside the iPhone 7 as a way to replace the traditional wired headphone jack.

Apple's AirPods were first released more than a year ago, and they're so popular that supply still can't keep up with demand. If you've held off on purchasing the little Apple earrings because of connectivity or water resistance concerns, it's time to get excited. Apparently, the new AirPods will be partially water-resistant. Most importantly, the 2018 AirPods, known internally as B288, will also have hands-free voice command feature, according to Bloomberg. But that doesn't mean you can submerge the device in water. This leads to the assumption that only Apple will offer the AirPods charging case as a standalone product. Apple has said it needs more time, but a Japanese technology publication says Apple will start selling it in March, Computerworld reported.

Bloomberg report also talks about a 2019 version for AirPods.

Six months after announcing the new handsets, the proprietary AirPower wireless charging pad is nowhere to be seen.
