Michigan State legend Magic Johnson calls for firings amid scandal

John Engler, who was Governor of MI from 1990-2002, is an alumnus of the school, and was appointed interim president by the board of trustees on Wednesday after a unanimous vote.

The Detroit News reports that following the appointment, the university's faculty steering committee said it would call for a vote of no confidence to oust the entire Board of Trustees. If this motion for a vote passes, a vote of No Confidence in the Board of Trustees will be held at the next Faculty Senate meeting.

Blanchard, 75, will serve as a senior adviser in a still-undetermined-role, Engler said.

Students and faculty members protested his appointment, arguing the board hadn't asked for their input before making a decision.

Auto-Owners Insurance spokesman Trevor Mahoney tells The Associated Press Tuesday: "The company does not believe it is now appropriate to place advertising branding on media backdrops used during discussions of serious topics that have impacted the lives of many", on Tuesday. Before that, Engler spent six years running the National Association of Manufacturers and has mostly lived in Virginia since leaving the governor's mansion at the end of 2002. He pushed for education reforms, such as charter schools. After leaving office because of term limits, he directed business groups in Washington.

The choice of an interim president has been closely watched, as Michigan State has been embroiled in a sexual assault scandal that led to the resignation of Lou Anna Simon last week. The board will soon start the search for a permanent president.

One professor said the board didn't follow through on their commitment.

But she is hopeful he will lead the university in a new direction. They were upset that none of them were consulted by trustees about Engler's selection ahead of the vote.

"None of it was transparent or included people who would normally be involved in certain decisions", said Allswede, who no longer works for MSU. When time comes, I'll be able to speak out.

Nassar, a former physician for both Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, sexually abused young women for over two decades under the guise of medical treatment; over 190 women have come forward with reports of his abuse.

Engler was governor of MI from 1991 to 2003 and was a graduate of MSU.

"My hope is that despite his close ties, he will act with leadership and integrity", Denhollander wrote on Facebook.

Over 50 women, current students at Michigan State, linked arm-in-arm, made the march from Jenison Fieldhouse to the administration building to meet with four Board of Trustees members in demand of change.

No Michigan State trustees have resigned. But the leaders of Michigan State University, where he worked, have yet to take full responsibility for their failures to protect those girls, or to even learn what went wrong and regain the trust of the public.
