Ever since Justin Timberlake was announced to be the year's halftime performance, many wondered if he would actually perform with Prince via Hologram.
While that song was performed with Timberlake on a stage with lasers, it was a far cry from Lady Gaga atop the stadium or Katy Perry with her left shark.
For his show, Timberlake kicked off with "Filthy" from his most recent album, then transitioned into a medley of "Rock your body" (the song he dueted on with Jackson back in 2004) and "SexyBack". But it was his outfit that drew most attention, with many taking aim at the unusual get-up on social media. "My phone's just going insane", he said. To announce the start of the show, late-night host Jimmy Fallon introduced Timberlake.
He rose to center stage and sang "Suit and Tie" with back-up from the appropriately attired University of Minnesota marching band, who moved to the music with their instruments doubling as props.
Luckily, the pop star managed to pull off a (mostly) controversy-free show, with the centerpiece being a tribute to late hometown hero Prince.
In fact, most of Americans and many others across the globe will be tuning in to Super Bowl 52 to see whether it will be the Eagles with backup Nick Foles at center or the Patriots and Tom Brady at starting quarterback position who win the Lombardi Trophy.
While there were rumours Jackson might reunite with Timberlake at this year's halftime performance, she shot them down with a statement over the weekend.
"Family, I spoke w/Justin 2nite and he shared heartfelt words of respect for Prince & the Purple fans", she wrote. Sheila E., who performed with Prince, said she had spoken with Timberlake and that there would be no Prince hologram during the halftime festivities.
Not everyone watches the Super Bowl for the football: Last year, Lady Gaga's halftime show on Fox was viewed by 117.5 million people, which is almost six million more than watched the New England Patriots' thrilling (or crushing) overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
