This resembled a college bowl game more than your typical contest between NFL No. 1 seeds, what with the total absence of competent defense.
Down six, the Patriots then went for it on 4th-and-5 but Brady, perhaps still rattled by his failure to secure a ideal pass, couldn't hit tight end Rob Gronkowski. "We have such a great city to play for and I am proud to be a Philadelphia Eagle".
The stage was set for another dramatic Super Bowl comeback for Tom Brady and the Patriots. But the Eagles' Brandon Graham swatted the ball out of his hand with 2:09 left, and the ball landed in teammate Derek Barnett's arms at the Patriots' 31.
The Eagles got the ball back and stayed aggressive. Michaels said. "They go to the very, very, very back of the playbook for the touchdown". They had a lot of the same talent, led by the quite possibly the best quarterback ever, "Touchdown" Tom Brady and his mastermind coach Bill Belichick. Still, the Patriots needed more out of their rushing attack.
The teams combined for 673 yards of offense in the first half, with the Patriots amassing 350 yards and the Eagles 323.
The Eagles took the ball to the New England one-yard line and when they wound up on fourth down, head coach Doug Pederson surprised everyone not only by going for the touchdown but by calling a trick play.
"I'm speechless", said Foles, a back-up who was thrust into the starting position when Carson Wentz suffered a season-ending injury in December.
Brady, in his second season of 2001, took over for injured starter Drew Bledsoe in the third game. Eagles lead Patriots 3-0 in the first quarter.
Foles completed 28 of 43 passes for 373 yards.
"To be on the podium with my wife Tori and my daughter Lily, I mean that's what it's about", Foles said.
"Man, I told y'all", Jeffery said after the game. "Nick Foles was hot and he deserved everything that came to him".
As the Eagles lined up on fourth-and-goal from the New England 1-yard line, Collinsworth said, "This is an unbelievable call. It's a play we've been working on the last couple weeks and our guys executed brilliantly".
First, Nick Foles replaced an MVP candidate, then he slayed the NFL's past two MVPs in the postseason, leading the Eagles to their first Lombardi trophy and - wait for it - earning Super Bowl LII's most valuable player award.
Foles got plenty of help with his running attack. "If that ball's not loose in his arms when that last foot came down, I give up". Both are averaging at least 9.0 yards per play. While U.S. Bank stadium is in a dome and climate controlled, those fans on the streets in Minneapolis were dealing with temperatures in the single digits. The only sack tied the record for fewest in a Super Bowl and, most importantly, resulted in a fumble that all but sealed Philadelphia's victory. Again, the Patriots were near the goal line and Brandin Cooks tried to leap for a first down but was met with a huge tackle from Eagles defender Rodney McLeod.
What was shaky at times was the kicking game. Brady threw for a game-record 505 yards and three TDs, hitting Rob Gronkowski for 4 yards before Stephen Gostkowski's extra point gave New England its first lead, 33-32.
