The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tally shows hospitalization rates surged last week to surpass the nasty flu season of the winter of 2014-2015, when the vaccine was a poor match to the main flu bug. Other strains of the flu, like H1N1 and Influenza B viruses, are also circulating, and they're better served by the vaccine.
Since last year's flu season there has been a 2.3 per cent increase in the distribution of influenza vaccine to local health care providers and a 20.2 per cent increase in the distribution to local pharmacies.
New York's historic flu season is continuing to worsen every week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said Thursday.
Symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Adults aged 65 or older had the most hospitalizations, followed by those aged 50 to 64, and children below 5.
"We will keep ordering more and will offer the flu shot until June 30", Sullender said.
The number of cases for people between the ages of 25 to 49 has increased by about 68 percent and the number of visits for individuals between the ages of 5 to 24 has increased by 41 percent compared to a year ago, according to the weekly report. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience those symptoms.
Flu is widespread in 48 states, down from 49 last week, with OR reporting less flu activity, the CDC said. "When you get sick, stay home". Be sure to throw the tissue away after using it.
