The letters follow the sentencing of Nassar for molesting women and girls under the guise of medical treatment.
CNN adds that although the investigation actually began last year, the details were just announced on Saturday, January 27, just days after Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison. He also has pleaded guilty to three charges of criminal sexual conduct in Eaton County, Michigan, for which he is due to be sentenced Wednesday.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association is also investigating Michigan State, and inquiries are planned in Congress and the state Legislature.
The case of Nassar, 54, has rocked Michigan State University, where he was a faculty member and physician at an on-campus clinic.
The involvement of the Michigan State Police and Schuette's office comes after many months of calls for an independent investigation into how MSU addressed allegations against former MSU doctor Larry Nassar going back two decades. Schuette says the main focus will be on who at MSU might have fielded complaints from victims and what they did with that information.
"(Sexual assault involving athletes as the alleged assailant) would be handled in-house. She said: It is clear that the public has lost confidence in the current administration of Michigan State University, and changes are needed to move the university forward.

Every area of MSU will be investigated and the team plans to meet with every victim of Nassar's abuse.
ESPN also detailed two incidents that allegedly involved former MSU point guard Travis Walton that were made during his time as a student assistant coach for Izzo during the 2009-10 season, in which the Spartans went to the Final Four. USA Gymnastics also confirmed that its entire board of directors would resign as requested by the U.S. Olympic Committee. USA Gymnastics issued a statement in response, supporting an investigation and accepting "the absolute need of the Olympic family to promote a safe environment for all of our athletes".
DeVos confirmed the investigation Friday.
Forsyth said he was "outraged" by the Nassar case and wanted to know why nobody stopped his "predatory conduct" for nearly 20 years. The investigation began and Nassars employment was terminated and, given the challenges looming, the planned transition to another president was shelved.
