Graduate students form the backbone of research done at universities in the U.S. When professors proudly talk about the wonderful work their lab is performing, the odds are that the critical contributions were made by an army of smart, hardworking grad students.
Over the past year, the Georgetown Alliance of Graduate Employees - a group of master's and doctoral students representing every discipline at Georgetown University - has participated in over a thousand conversations with graduate workers about unionizing to better their living and working conditions. They could still change course in a way that would moot the tax bill: They could recognize that graduate student workers add value and stop charging tuition. "We don't see that money at all, and the impact of that being calculated as income would mean that our already-modest stipends will be reduced to such a point that we won't be able to live from it".
Graduate students rally against the proposed GOP tax reform bill at Union Square in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, U.S., November 29, 2017. North Dakota residents pay less for tuition at NDSU and UND than out-of-state students, so their tuition waivers are worth less. Currently, the tuition waivers that many graduate students rely on to make their education affordable are not subject to federal taxes. Graduate students serve our communities.
Earlier in November, President Vincent Price sent an email to the University outlining the administration's opposition to the tax bill.
In a statement released Monday, UC President Janet Napolitano, student regent Paul Monge and student regent-designate Devon Graves jointly condemned the tax plan, stating that it would have a "devastating" impact on UC graduate students. "The university is working directly with key lawmakers and collaborating with numerous other institutions and associations in opposing these changes, and in vigorously advocating for our students and our community education". "If they charge me more money, I don't have any option other than to go to another country". "The graduate student doesn't get tuition waivers-all of a sudden it becomes income, so that graduate education is completely unaffordable".
Sophomore Ema Klugman addressed the crowd before they marched, listing the roles graduate students play at the University.
Her deputy press secretary, Jared Powell, said Wednesday the congresswoman "feels strongly" about the provision and remains hopeful it will be abandoned as the House and Senate merge their tax bills into one.
The new provision will cause educators at all levels to be taxed at higher rates, and prevent many from capitalizing on tuition remission programs.
Clinton stood in the middle of a circle of students and faculty, offering assistance and contacts to whom anxious constituents could voice their concerns to representatives like Rogers. His statement came after the House of Representative passed the Republicans' $1.5 trillion tax package, dubbed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
We appreciate the desire to simplify and strengthen the nation's tax code, and we also recognize that our legislators have many competing interests to balance. "The university is only concerned about protecting their donors and endowments".
The UI athletic program takes in about $16 million a year for ticket rights, and nearly half of that goes to support athletic scholarships, officials said. "For many students, it will be very hard for them to continue".
This is done because grad students, who typically get paid around $25,000 per year, can't afford tuition that in some cases can exceed $50,000 per year.
English Ph.D. student Aaron Bartles-Swindells said he sought a graduate education in the United States instead of in his home country of Britain because the graduate studies programs offer tuition waivers and stipends. No Democrats voted in favor of the bill.
Protesters repeated chants like "no tuition, without remission" and "if we don't get it, shut it down" among others throughout the event. One belonged to a passing jogger dressed as Santa Claus, who stopped to shout his support for the graduate students.
