How to survive a nuclear attack, explained by Guam officials

The following editorial is from Yomiuri Shimbun (Japan). Along with a bigger set of maneuvers held every spring, the exercises are met routinely by strong condemnation and threats of countermeasures from North Korea. For all of their perceived irrationality, they do recognize that the United States and its allies could wipe out North Korea through either conventional means or nuclear means.

In 2016, Japan deployed PAC-3 batteries to the islands of Miyako and Ishigaki in Okinawa Prefecture before North Korea launched what it claimed was a satellite.

North Korea and the United States have traded bellicose rhetoric after the United Nations Security Council further tightened sanctions on North Korea for its two tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles last month.

According to some assessments, North Korea has succeeded in miniaturizing nuclear warheads.

"Trust in the nuclear umbrella the U.S. provides to the South can be shaken", read the editorial, adding that "now is the time to start reviewing nuclear armament".

Now Trump calls Guam's Governor to congratulate him on becoming famous because of North Korea.

Among those distressed by the president's inflammatory words is U.S. Sen. The military plans to move thousands of U.S. Marines to Guam from Okinawa in southern Japan.

If the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fires missiles toward Guam, they would take about 14 minutes to reach the island and the alert system there would notified the public, Guam's Homeland Security Office said Thursday.

Even so, its reported plan to launch missiles toward Guam is extremely unusual.

Replicas of North and South Korean missiles are pictured at the Korean War Memorial in Seoul on August 10, 2017.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga has every reason to denounce the North's plan, saying, "It is obviously an act of provocation and absolutely can not be tolerated".

The Hweasong-12, which was revealed for the first time at a military parade in April, is an intermediate-range ballistic missile that is believed to have a range of more than 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles).

US diplomats aren't giving up on avoiding a military conflict. "Seoul and Washington are closely cooperating and monitoring all developments in Pyongyang, and are preparing to take action instantly if a provocation is detected".

Like other US territories, Guam has a sometimes complicated relationship with the USA mainland but many across the island say despite the threats and concerns they feel reassured and protected by the military — especially in times of tense, geopolitical sparring.

But there's also some resentment about not being able to vote in the general election for USA president.

"Concerned parties must exercise restraint and avoid remarks and actions that escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula", it cited Xi as saying.

He goes on to ask for prayers that the Holy Spirit will instill in the leaders of the US and all nations "the virtues of wisdom and understanding to promote peace rather than war".
