Following a crushing victory in the first one-day worldwide in Dambulla, India will look to carry on their dominant run in the second ODI of the five-match series against Sri Lanka, staring in Pallekele on Thursday. Earlier, in a virtual replay of the first ODI in Dambulla, Sri Lanka once again failed to capitalise on a good start and ended up with 238 for eight after being put into bat by Kohli. In the chase, they managed only a solitary wicket via a runout as India raced to victory in just 28.5 overs. With this 3-wicket win, India go 2-0 up in the 5-ODI series.
Dananjaya first rose to prominence when Mahela Jayawardene and Graham Ford picked him from nowhere for Sri Lanka's World T20 campaign at home in 2012. Then, along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he provided some relief to the Indian side. The Sanath Jayasuriya-led selection committee has fielded 40 players in ODIs since taking over in May previous year. Enter 23-year old Akila Dananjaya, another one of those unorthodox spinners Sri Lanka keep producing.
With MS Dhoni at the crease, India still needed over a hundred to secure a win, which at that point looked close to impossible.
Indian openers Dhawan and Rohit started the chase perfectly by forging a 109-run partnership. For the moment, the selectors are keeping the faith, although they insist that he isn't an automatic selection, and that they are cognisant of the fact that runs have eluded India's superman in recent times.
"It was a case of having two left-arm spinners that led us not playing Kuldeep in the first game". We tried that whatever opportunity we get for singles or doubles we will not leave that because by adding singles we wouldn't reach a stage of needing 6-7 runs per over as we didn't have many batsmen left.
It will be interesting if Kohli shuffles his batting order to give K.L. Rahul and Kedar Jadhav some batting time. Today's match is to be played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The second ODI is scheduled to be played on Thursday at Pallekele.
Speedster Bumrah claimed four wickets in Niroshan Dickwella (31), Milinda Siriwardana (58), Chamara Kapugedera (40) and Akila Dananjaya (9).
Jasprit Bumrah accounted for both on his way to figures of 4 for 43 which made him the pick of the India bowlers.
