Trump heads to his New Jersey golf course for US Women's Open

This could be the beginning of a handsome friendship.

This year's festivities, which also commemorate the 100th anniversary of America's entry into World War I, is being marked by French President Emmanuel Macron's invitation to his USA counterpart Donald Trump to participate as a guest of honor. Mrs. Trump concluded her day by joining her husband for dinner with President and Mrs. Macron at Le Jules Verne Restaurant in the Eiffel Tower.

This particularly thirsty display comes as part of Trump's slightly awkward trip to France - his relationship with centrist Macron has been frosty ever since Macron gave him an aggressive handshake at their first meeting (yes, this is politics now).

There is little downside for Macron. Macron's invitation is created to keep Trump at least partially engaged with European allies. "A lot of people don't know that", he said. The trips come at a time when the relationship between the USA and the European Union (EU) has soured.

"This is very much Trump being wooed by Macron, who seems to be very good at handling Trump as a person".

The French president said that he managed to establish friendly relations with the USA counterpart as it is crucial for the successful development of bilateral ties.

French President Emmanuel Macron slapped down military chiefs on Thursday after his top general criticized spending cuts to this year's budget, while pledging to increase military expenditure next year.

Even as he promised to withdraw from the accord on June 1, Trump said he would be willing to renegotiate the terms of the Paris agreement to create "a new deal that protects our country and its taxpayers".

Melania Trump had French history in mind when she wore a floral dress Friday in Paris.

First, there was yet another dramatic handshake, this one suggesting more of a sense of comity instead of animosity.

As both leaders prepare to attend the Bastille Day parade together on Friday, that strategy appears to have worked.

The American president noted that Bastille Day marks one year since a terrorist killed 86 people celebrating the holiday in Nice. Hence the need to get Mr Trump onside if Macron is - with Britain in disarray and Germany's Angela Merkel unable to mask her dislike of the new American president - to position himself as the key transatlantic interlocutor.

The matter of Junior and the Russian meeting did come up during a brief press conference Trump and Macron held.

Why did Macron seem even more hostile and determined than before? Indeed, Trump is viewing a positive and diverse side to Europe after his meeting firstly with the leader of Poland, and now meeting Macron in Paris.

To that end, Macron made no secret of these differences in his joint appearance with Trump on Thursday. "As a result he will lead the necessary thought and work that correspond to his campaign promises".

But as Castaner put it: "We can do two things".

"Emmanuel, nice to see you".
