When the draw was made just over a week ago, many fans would have anticipated a third-round contest between Djokovic and the popular Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.
Despite his disappointment, and what appeared a valedictory wave to all corners of the shell-shocked court, the 31-year-old insisted he will be back in 2018. Martina Navratilova (306) and Chris Evert (299) follow Williams in the top four list of Grand Slam match wins. "He is a tough, tough opponent", Nadal said. "I expect that every time I have played him he has become better". Most of the time in the fifth he played more aggressive and better than me. "That cost me two sets", he said.
"He's a specialist on grass", Nadal said of Muller.
"It was not easy to keep believing. But I thought we would play on a bigger court". Since 2014 when I came back, I'm able to play full seasons without any breaks during the season.
"I'm ready to go this afternoon if I have to which is great".
He said of Paire: "He again has a different game to a lot of the guys now".
Roger Federer's hopes of winning an eighth Wimbledon title remain intact after he sealed a quarter-final place with a straight-sets win over Grigor Dimitrov. This will be the sixth meeting of these two players and Federer has been ideal with a record of 6-0 between them in the past.
Dimitrov was weighed down by more than 25 unforced errors while Federer kept his in low double figures. Federer was also dealing with a cold that has nagged him throughout the tournament but said he was starting to come around it. "I was following my game pretty well." he related.
"It was a terrific match for me".
Nadal, fresh from a 10th French Open title, faces fellow left-hander Gilles Muller, who is looking to make the quarter-finals for the first time in seven years. All you can hear is the hitting of the ball.
"He gave me some opportunities and I was happy to take advantage of them".
"Last couple of days, practice has been really good".
"One-handed backhand always brings a bit of a different feel to the match because of the slice, coming over".
