"You'll see me there", Payne reassured the candidate, later telling a reporter he was pushing all his friends who normally scoff at state-level races to turn out.

Ed Gillespie - Favored in pre-polling as the likely primary victor.

The two candidates, as well as many Democrats, have pressed Gillespie on his support, or lack thereof, for Trump.

Stewart first gained fame a decade ago by launching a crackdown on illegal immigration in Prince William County.

Although the Democratic contest garnered the most pre-election attention, Gillespie's narrow victory against former Trump state campaign chairman Corey Stewart provided the night's biggest surprise.

Virginia Democrats, a key chunk of the electorate, will pick one of these candidates as a standard-bearer.

Democratic candidate for governor and former congressman Tom Perriello, center talks with voter Roberta Dorr, right, outside a polling place Tuesday, June 13, 2017, in North Chesterfield, Va. Perriello faces Lt. Gov Ralph Northam faces in today's primary. Polls have shown that Perriello has a slight lead in the race, but that lead may be contingent on unreliable pools of voters who usually sit primaries out. The Democratic contest has proven to be more competitive, with former Rep. Tom Perriello feeding off the enthusiasm of liberals ready to send Trump a message.

"If you were to construct the ideal progressive candidates for Virginia right now, I don't think you would have constructed Tom Perriello", Kidd said.

But while fierce criticism of the president has been a hallmark of his campaign, the lieutenant governor underscores he's stressing his experience in Richmond, arguing that has best prepared him for the job.

By far, the most closely watched races will be between the five candidates running to be Virginia's next governor. You can learn more about Davis here. He has a low-key manner, stressing his service to the state and country as a pediatric neurologist, as a state senator for six years and, the last three years, as lieutenant governor. "Roughly 87.8 percent of Northam's money came from Virginia donors". He served in the U.S. Army and as state senator for the 6th Senate District before joining McAuliffe's gubernatorial ticket in 2013. Challenging him is Gene Rossi, a retired federal prosecutor who's vowed to work on criminal justice reform, as well as Susan Platt, a longtime political operative and former lobbyist who's made a point of attacking Trump's policies.

Yet the GOP holds 66 seats in the state's 100 seat House of Delegates. Primary endorsements have the potential to complicate selections for the general election as well. Be sure to check your sample ballot to see whether your voting district includes a House of Delegates primary race.

All registered voters are eligible to vote, but the registration deadline for Tuesday's election has passed. Regardless of today's victor, Democrats will enter the general election energized and confident. "The reason this race became so competitive in a few short months is that voters are increasingly hungry for visionary progressives who believe in challenging power - from systemic racism to corporate control of our democracy and economy". The ballots will be different, depending on which party you choose, and the offices open in your location.
