Coach Jim Schlossnagle said that when the Horned Frogs finally broke through Friday night against Kowar it kick started the offense, even though the Gators responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
The Horned Frogs (49-17) will face the Gators (48-19) again on Saturday evening with a trip to the CWS Championship Series on the line. After they struggled against Florida's pitching in the first meeting, TCU came back on Friday and scored nine runs and really let their actions speak for themselves.
Kowar was quite literally hit-or-miss Friday night. McDonnell was the first coach ejected in a College World Series game since Cal State Fullerton's George Horton on June 18, 2007. TCU has not allowed more than three runs in any game in the NCAA Tournament.
The third inning was the most direct indicator of Kowar's performance.
Between the Frogs' two rallies, the Gators answered with a two-spot in the third but squandered a few chances to pull closer or even the score.
TCU is in the bracket final despite its Nos.
Things went similarly in the fourth.
For the first time in this CWS, TCU's most unsafe hitters looked comfortable and looked like themselves. "I started to think after he was punching us out so much in the first two-plus innings if there ever has been a 20-strikeout game in the World Series".
Player to Watch: TCU senior shortstop Kevin Merrill homered in Tuesday's win over Texas A&M and had a two-run single in Thursday's win over Louisville. So it's only natural that the Cards' skipper should get severely worked up over a close bang-bang play on a steal attempt at second base.
Kowar exited after five innings. "We had some timely hitting with two strikes and that helped us". Florida knocked Traver out in the fourth but was unable to get to the TCU bullpen.
Florida walked three batters in its first 21 innings at the CWS. "He's a good hitter". Then you put yourself in a position where somebody's gotta beat you twice to get to the last round. "You've got to get ahead". Reliever Cal Coughlin would enter the game in the fifth after Lodolo allowed the second Cardinal home run to center fielder Logan Taylor, and he would pitch two-thirds of a scoreless frame.
"We're excited we're 2-0", O'Sullivan said Friday. "That's all I was trying to do".
Nick Horvath and Ryan Larson drew consecutive walks to keep the rally going and Dalton Guthrie tied the game with a double into the left field corner.
An inning later, a two-out error cracked a window of opportunity open, and Travers walked Austin Langworthy to finish his night.
The UF starters combined to allow only one earned run in 14 innings and have struck out 14.
The TCU baseball team stepped off the field this morning for a special visit.
The loss to the Gators places U of L in the elimination bracket. The game will begin at approximately 8 p.m. ET and be broadcast on ESPN and available for stream on WatchESPN.
