The #Boston Celtics traded down from the first overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft to the third pick and that made it look like they were in the ideal position to draft #Josh Jackson of the Kansas Jayhawks. He resisted the temptations teams across the league were offering for that golden pile of assets Ainge continues to protect like a Brinks guard. But why would the Celtics, or any team for that matter, make any such assurance to any player?
"Family is the most important thing. I got to spend time with Danny Ainge and coach Stevens and the other staff and hang out". That was undoubtedly a wing, who would fit in better with the Celtics lineup immediately, but would it be Duke's Jayson Tatum or Kansas's Josh Jackson?
Since trading with the Sixers and landing the No. 3 choice, making Jackson a more viable possibility, Jackson said he and Armstrong couldn't work out the details to visit Boston.
Carlisle projected Smith as a starter, with the obvious caveat that the job won't be handed to the 19-year-old who left the Wolfpack after his freshman season, barely a year removed from tearing a knee ligament as a high school senior.
But Tatum is used to high expectations after a season at Duke, and the opportunity to play under one of the brightest young minds in basketball will be well worth it. Does Tatum have a stronger value as a player or a trade option?
So you might be nervous that the Celts are stuck in the same place they were before last season: Filled with great pieces but lacking a superstar (of course, you didn't know Isaiah Thomas would have that kind of season). He can shoot and we needed a guy like him.
- TYLER LYDON: The 6-9 sophomore from Syracuse averaged 13.2 points and 8.6 rebounds while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range. "There's a lot to like about Jayson; he's going to be a terrific player".
Kyle Lowry used to play in Houston and he does not intend on returning to the Toronto Raptors, while a report has surfaced that the Atlanta Hawks are looking to pull off a sign and trade involving their all-star power forward Paul Millsap. Second-round picks don't get guaranteed contracts like first-rounders do.
It was unlikely that Ainge put Tatum or the third pick into play with the Pacers, considering that most believe George ultimately will join his hometown Lakers.
For the first time in National Basketball Association history, each of the first seven draft picks were one-and-done freshmen.
"[Tatum] has Paul Pierce-like moves, he will be the flawless fit for the Celtics", former Duke point guard Jay Williams said Thursday on SportsCenter.
The Celtics began the afternoon waiting for the monumental asking price on Porzingis to drop. But after they got the third pick, we tried to schedule something for me to get out there, but it was just scheduling issues and it was just a little too late for me to get out there by then. The Sacramento Kings traded picks with the Portland Trailblazers and took UNC forward Justin Jackson No. 15 overall.
On draft night, they still grabbed one of the most NBA-ready players available. "He's a mature offensive player, for his age coming in", said Van Gundy, the Pistons' coach and team president.
The Celtics landed SMU forward Semi Ojeleye at No. 37 overall, the first of Boston's three second-round selections.
It will be a long time before Ainge has to deal out of desperation.
