Trump's Middle East Visit, New Alliances, and a Terrified Iran

UN Resident Coordinator in Iran Gary Lewis has expressed his excitement regarding cooperation with Iran during President Hassan Rouhani's second term.

Iranian democracy is not ideal. A moderate cleric, incumbent Rouhani was pitted against hardliner Ebrahim Raisi, who was reportedly backed by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

He added, "If we are proud of the elections and the people's participation, it is because of the path Imam Khomeini (RA) showed us".

Rouhani, known as pragmatist and reformist has engaged his country in foreign policy changes. "Improvement of banking relations will be an important base for expansion of ties and can encourage great banks in two countries to have more relations". Iran's high literacy (especially among women)-unlike Pakistan's relatively low one-dictated moderation.

"Americans resorted to many different methods against Iran but failed in all".

Pakistan needn't self-flagellate on being in the wrong regional camp.

While their powers are limited to local affairs, the councils represent direct control of governance by Iran's 80 million people. The feeling in Pakistan is right: why join a sectarian gang of authoritarian states against neighboring Iran?

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - For Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, winning re-election may have been the easy part.

"Khamenei and conservatives in his office still run the show, are close to vested interests, and will make structural change hard", Iran watcher Cliff Kupchan, chairman of the Eurasia Group, wrote shortly after Rouhani's win.

Rouhani made clear after the election he remains concerned about the detentions. "We are waiting for this government to settle". Moreover, Iran must understand that after Syria, its regional opponents will try to neutralize the Iranian influence in Iraq, which was established after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia resulted in the signing of 380 billion dollars' worth of deals, 110 billion of which was specifically devoted to arms sales. Let us hope that his brief visit to the Middle East helps to create favorable conditions for progress toward peace in the region.

Earlier this week, Trump addressed a US-Arab summit in Riyadh and called for isolation of Iran.

So too could U.S. President Donald Trump's renewed push to isolate Iran - a policy likely to embolden hard-liners. The Iranian Revolution of 1979 overthrew Washington's puppet ruler, the shah of Iran, and just as in the case of Castro's revolution in Cuba, the US has never forgiven it for that crime. But after taking office, President Trump and his team ramped up the rhetoric against Iran, imposed new economic sanctions on Iranians and Iran-related firms, and issued the notorious executive ban on travel from Iran and several other Muslim-majority countries. He has adopted a wait and see attitude that gives the Trump administration the opportunity to engage with Tehran. For Rouhani's administration to realize its policies and for the country to contribute to stability in the Middle East, as a regional power, it is essential for the nation to be supported both by public opinion at home and by the worldwide community.

Following the 2015 agreement on Iran's nuclear programs, the Obama administration lifted sanctions on Tehran in 2016. However, the possibility of Iran and Russian Federation having different interests in Syria at a some point is quite possible: this is evidenced, among other things, by Moscow's calm reaction to the Israeli Air Forces' air strikes on Hezbollah's positions in Syria.
